Peace and quiet is one of the most enjoyable parts of flying international long-haul flights in a premium cabin. Removed from most distractions of terra firma, there is enough space, time, and comfort to open the mind and think.
This photo of my son, Alex, was taken in 2017 as we were returning from a trip to Hong Kong and Shanghai. We had the good fortune of flying business class on the upper deck of a Delta 747-400. The upper deck cabin had only 14 seats arranged 1 x 1. It was like being on a private jet. In 2017, Delta retired the 747. That’s sad because the Delta 747 upper deck was the best business cabin in the sky.

Is it possible I would have flown on one 50 years ago? I remember flying to California with my family when I was about 20 years old and seem to vaguely recall my dad going upstairs on the plane to get a drink. I also remember that smoking was allowed!

First class is without question a great choice for long-haul flights. First class is my first choice when I have the points or miles available. First class has been eliminated on many carriers unfortunately, and I suspect that Covid-19 will cause more airlines to eliminate international first class in the future. I don’t think there are many who want to pay frost class prices without first class service.
