Located on the south side of the Erechtheion, an Acropolis temple dedicated to Poseidon and Athena, the Porch of the Maidens faces the Parthenon. The Porch of the Maidens is bounded by six caryatids, columns shaped like women. The caryatids on the Erechtheion are replicas.
Five of the six original marble caryatids reside in the Acropolis Museum in Athens where they are being restored and protected. The sixth caryatid is displayed at the British Museum. Greece wants to reunite all six maidens in Athens.

Yep Greece should unite all the pieces together. It’s important for history and archeology. And that also reminds me, we’ve got a lot of art forms outside the Nigeria shores and they’re exhibited in Britain! Maybe the government should get them back too!

Taking artifacts because local peoples couldn’t stop it is a big problem many museums must deal with.

Many of these artefacts were actually taken out of deceit many decades ago. Gladly, museums can never have more than the source so adventurers and researchers will come to Greece eventually.

It is nice that people can see things in a museum but ownership should stay with the original country or people unless there was a legitimate sale. Like you say many artifacts were just stolen.

I’ve been to Athens and was so amazed with the Parthenon and how it’s still standing today! I loved that museum too, very cool!

I agree. Athens is very impressive. The Acropolis and Parthenon must be the top attraction. This was my only trip to Greece. I was in Athens and on Mykonos. I’d love to see more of the historical sites in the countryside and more of the magical Greek isles. The Parthenon must have been incredibly well built. I think most of the damage must have occurred in 1687 when the Turks stored ammunition there and a Venetian mortar shell landed on the Parthenon causing a massive explosion.

A restored temple would indeed be quite awesome. Greece is working on the caryatids in the museum. It would be amazing to also restore the Parthenon and all of the buildings on the Acropolis. That would take a lot of money.

Agreed. Walking tours are small enough that it is possible to have a conversation with the guide. Another thing I like is I’ve never had boring, time-wasting stops for shopping like on many coach tours.
