Staying with the Rome/Vatican theme of recent week’s, this edition of Sculpture Saturday presents Anubis, the Egyptian god of the dead. This statue is located at the Vatican Museums. Circa 100-138 AD, the statue is made of marble and is 1.5 meters tall.
Anubis is depicted as a powerful man with the head of a canine. It is believed that Anubis’ canine head actually represents the African golden wolf not a jackal.
Anubis served as the god of death, mummification, embalming, and the underworld. One of his primary roles was to usher souls into the afterlife. I think Anubis is perfect for today’s post.
Happy Halloween!

That is a might statue. Anubis is so popular, no? maybe because of the dog-looking half.
