While visiting the ancient Thai capital, Ayutthaya, in 2015, I paid respects to one of Thailand’s largest Reclining Buddhas. The Buddha is 42 meters (137 feet) long and eight meters (26 feet) tall at the highest point. This Buddha is nearly as long as the famous Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho in Bangkok.

It is made of brick covered in stucco. Buddha is resting his head on a giant lotus blossom. Reclining Buddhas represent the historical Buddha during his last illness preparing to enter parinirvana.
