One Word Sunday is a blogging challenge hosted by Debbie Smyth at Travel With Intent. This week’s challenge is Ugly.
Here are two photos that fit the bill. Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. If the komodo dragon or whale shark or some reading this post was judging, I’d be the ugly one. 😄
A resting komodo dragon in Komodo National Park on Rinca Island, Indonesia. The ranger who was the guide for the hike through the park was brave enough to get in front of this resting dragon to take the photograph.
Oslob Municipality near the southern tip of the island of Cebu in the Philippines is one of several locations around the world that gives tourists the opportunity to swim with whale sharks.
The whale sharks here are generally between 25 ft and 35 ft (about 7.5m to 10.5m) in length. They weigh…a lot.
I would never call a komodo dragon or whale shark ugly to their face.

A great example of the subjectivity of our views on appearance.
And what a beast to get to see

Poor guy was just out getting some rays and recharging his reptile batteries and come along and insult him. 😎😄

are the komodo dragons not as aggressive as an alligator? Even if they are not, I’m not sure i could get too close…

Good question. Komodo dragons eat only about once every two months. Hard to compare them to alligators or crocodiles. Alligators are regular fixtures on many golf courses in the southeast US. I’ve teed off with them just off the tee box. The dragons didn’t seem concerned about people. They have a steady diet of Timor deer and water buffalo.

all lizard type animals just terrify me; there’s just something so pre-historic about them that frightens me…

The way they stick out their really long forked tongue was the creepiest thing for me.
Reminded me of snakes, which are my biggest fear

that would be creepy, like a gigantic snake…

These both look like unbelievable experiences! I’ve only ever seen Komodo dragons in captivity, I’m sure both look unbelievable in the wild

Some of the TV shows about the dragons overplay the dangers for dramatic effect. It was a great experience to see them in their natural habitat. Thanks for checking out the post!

I had no idea that Komodo dragons could get that big. That is an impressive photo.

They can be as big as 10′ long. The biggest we came across was maybe 7′ – 8′.

The dragons are all over the place and in very close proximity to people around the park office. As long as the ranger/naturalist was comfortable, I was too.

I would say you are the brave one sitting on the dragons back
Did you imagine you were Jon Snow 🐲

I t looks like I’m almost on top of the dragon but actually several feet behind it. The ranger was the brave one. I didn’t think of Jon Snow. 😊
