Thanks for your comment. It was lucky that I saw the rainbows so far below the airplane.

I don’t recall seeing one before. Explanations for the phenomenon are complicated, at least to me.

I think it is the first time I’ve seen a round rainbow with an image inside. The science behind it seems very complicated.

Aha! Splendid Brocken spectre and glory! I once managed to witness this optical phenomenon from the top of a mountain (in which case the ‘spectre’ shadow was my own and not that of an aircraft) – https://geotopoi.wordpress.com/2010/06/12/snowdon-brocken-spectre/
By the way, the glory is caused by diffraction by mist / cloud rather then the refraction/reflection effect that causes rainbows.

Thanks for sharing your post with your spectre image inside the glory. The process by which they are created seems quite complicated.

Yep. I wonder if more round rainbows are being created that lens of camera and eye don’t pick up. Thanks for taking a look and commenting!

Rainbows are fascinating and the shape of it make it Even more extra ordinary. A pilot told me once that when they are up in the air they do not see the shape as a bow men more as a right Line. Do you know IF that is true?
