Sculpture Saturday – Without Them, There’s No Us

Sculpture Saturday returns to the North Carolina Arboretum for a look at Lex Turnbull’s Without Them, There’s No Us.

The Artist Statement notes that the sculpture represents the importance of pollinators and symbolizes transformation and freedom.

The sculpture is roughly 6.5 feet tall, 5.5 feet wide and 1.0 feet deep.  It is made of wood, steel, wire screen, and plants.

Pollinators play a role in producing the majority of the food we eat and drink. Insects (bees, wasps, moths, butterflies, flies, beetles) are the most common pollinators, but as many as 1,500 species of vertebrates such as birds and mammals serve as pollinators, including hummingbirds, perching birds, flying foxes, fruit bats, possums, lemurs and even a lizard (gecko) according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  People can also be inadvertent pollinators from  pollen that sticks to our shoes and clothing.
