Deer Island served as a prison for minor criminals from 1880 to 1991. Today, Deer Island is home to the second largest water treatment plant in the United States and 4.5 miles of trails with great views of the Boston, Massachusetts skyline, Logan Airport, Boston Harbor and the Atlantic Ocean.
It’s beautiful. I didn’t know.

Deer Island has a fascinating history. I’ll look at it a lot differently now when I see it from the air.

People are encouraged to visit for the views and recreational facilities. Deer Island deserves a lot more than a Silent Sunday post. Its history is pretty amazing. According to Wikipedia, among various uses, in the mid 1800s it served as the reception point for many Irish immigrants. It is not even an island having become connected to the mainland by the Great New England Hurricane of 1938. Mark Wahlberg did time there. It is on the approach path to one of the main runways at Logan Airport. I’d seen it many times from the air as in the photo and wondered what it was. History is right in front of us at times. I had no idea until now.

What a beautiful and fascinating site, and in all honesty one I hadnβt been aware of. I havenβt actually seen Alcatraz, so I guess that feels like a priority. But I do have a friend from Boston, so hey, maybe one day.

The impressive Alcatraz prison complex is still there while the prison on Deer Island was dismantled in the 90s. Deer Island does have very nice views, recreational facilities, and that giant water treatment plant that looks like a prison. Incidentally, it is no longer an island having become connected to the mainland thanks to the Great New England Hurricane of 1938. I’d seen Deer Island on flights into Boston over the years but never knew what it was. I’d like to visit one day also. Have a great week Leighton!
