El abuelo inmortal (the immortal grandfather) is a monument in bronze on a granite base located Grand Bourg Square, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Unveiled in 1951, this sculpture is the work of Argentine sculptor and engineer Ángel Eusebio Ibarra García. It is a representation of the Argentine hero General José de San Martín, with his granddaughters (Maria Mercedes and Josefina Dominga).

The sculpture depicts an old San Martín in casual conversation with his granddaughters. Reportedly, this is the only monument which represents San Martin in a civil status and as an elderly man.
The monument faces the “Instituto Nacional Sanmartiniano,” an institution devoted to preserve the general’s memory. The square and instituto are worth a visit if you are in the Argentinian capital.
Sculpture Saturday is a challenge hosted by No Fixed Plans.

might be a strange thing to say, but this really looks Argentinian!

what a wonderful sculpture. it’s interesting to note that an engineer was involved in the sculpture as well…

Engineering seems to be a big part of the design and building of many sculptures. Science and technology can come in handy in creating art.

I would think something that big would require some scientific background…
