Debbie’s One Word Sunday theme is Fame.
Neil Armstrong, the first human to set foot on a heavenly body other than Earth, is fame with a capital F! I had the pleasure of working with him when he served on the board of directors of Cinergy. From 1997 to 2000, I was the Assistant Corporate Secretary assigned to the Board’s Public Policy Committee on which Armstrong was a member. Armstrong retired in 2000 due to the age 70 limit for board members.

The photos aren’t mine obviously. I hope that is allowed. I really, really wish I had a photo with him.
Check out Debbie’s Fame post and the responses here.
despite not having a photo – you’ve got a wonderful memory…

I think Armstrong is one of the few people in recent history who is worth idolizing. He had a truly amazing career pre and post Apollo 11.

What a cool connection John. Did you ever get one-on-one time with him in any way? Informally I mean, or was it always business?

I did chat briefly with Armstrong at committee meetings and board receptions. He was very careful about his privacy but not in a really paranoid way. He always printed his name on board forms rather than use his signature which was a little weird. Armstrong was an extremely nice, matter-of-fact, unpretentious person — not like the stereotypical shit hot fighter jock, test pilot, astronaut. More like a typical engineer.
He told me his favorite aircraft to fly was a propeller plane, the F-8 Bearcat he flew in navy training. That’s about the slowest, least complicated craft he ever flew professionally. Thanks for the question, Leighton.

Fascinating stuff John. I will pass this onto my dad, who idolises Armstrong.

Armstrong will certainly be mentioned in history books far into the future.

Remarkably fame did not go to his head.
