Connecting at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) in March 2024 I marveled at a the new ghost kitchen operation (no dine-in service). It is essentially a food court in a box.
Select dishes from about a dozen restaurants and your order is delivered in a locker (like a giant vending machine). You don’t see or talk to anyone.

People were lining up to order. See this article for a wordier explanation.
What do you think of a food court in a box? Have you tried such an establishment?
it’s an interesting concept one you’d almost expect to find in Japan! I would definitely give it a go if just for fun!

You’re right. I wonder if this concept originated in Japan.

This is very similar to what I experienced (and loved) in NY, back in the day. Horn & Hardardt (sp?). These wonderful “restaurants “ were across midtown Manhattan…probably elsewhere but those were the ones I experienced…and were so efficient, delicious, and moderately priced. Different dishes in different “windows”. Always pretty fresh unless you got there late in the day.
This 21st century variation sounds well worth trying! And you can pick it up at your gate? Swell!

The menus must be very limited. I can’t see how they could do a full Cheesecake Factory menu this way.

Sounds interesting in a Covid kinda way — no human interaction.

It is an interesting concept. I hope it doesn’t catch on.

It’s troubling in the sense that more workers in the industry will be laid off.
