Seward Johnson’s sculpture of a photograph taken in Times Square on V-J Day, the date Japan surrendered and ended WWII. This sculpture was displayed at the Mardasson Memorial in Bastogne, Belgium in November 2019.
I can’t really say how tall this statue is from the angle of the shot but then, it’s a beautiful and well maintained sculpture. The painting sticks out.
I think this statue is safe. There are six or seven at least around the country and in Italy, France and Belgium. One of the photographs it is based on appeared in Life and has been thoroughly vetted, but you never know …
Yes. It is the same statue. There are at least six or seven of these statutes by the same sculptor in cities across the country and in France, Italy and Belgium.
Would you mind if I copied this picture to use with attribution on a private Facebook group for Midway volunteers? I’m not sure how many of them know this same statue is in other countries.
I did not know it was part of a group of statues until writing the post and looking it up. The info I got at Bastogne was the sculpture was a travelling exhibit.

It looks like the Big Kiss which is in San Diego, next to the USS Midway Carrier Museum. It was truly the kiss seen round the world.

I did not realize he had done the statue in so many different countries. Good to know,
