You correctly picked up on the vibe. There are many of these little izakayas concentrated in several neighborhoods. It is a fun place for many Japanese to relax after work.
In Tokyo people are used to being packed together in some situations. I believe “Omoide Yokocho” translates to something like “Piss Alley.” When the izakaya were first built after WWII they didn’t have bathrooms, so…😉
Izakayas are tiny but they hold a special place in the hearts of the customers. The packed atmosphere seems to add to enjoyment of the skewers of various meats, beer and other snacks and drinks.
Wow, want to eat motsuyaki. they are really good. This kind of place serve really good meals sometime.

so many bars are this size in Japan! It’s kinda cool whilst also being kinda claustrophobic!

These places are a little intimidating for foreigners but the food and drinks are good and reasonably priced.

Could be a problem sitting in the middle of that bench after a couple of pints “then I need the loo”

It looks like quite a small restaurant, but not very small glasses of beer… a place I will definitely enjoy 🍺.
